Just finished issue no. 4 of Punk Rock Jesus, by Sean Murphy (Vertigo)
I’m about to shave my head, get a mow-hawk and start working out until I’m the size of Vin Diesel; that’s how excited this series just got me.
Punk Rock Jesus is about the second coming of Jesus, a clone born through the combination of science, some 2,000 + year-old DNA and the greedy desires of a reality TV producer.
Jesus Christ, better known as Chris, was born through a 17 year old surrogate mother, Gwen. After his birth, Gwen realizes the terrible mistake she has made, and the prison that she has trapped her and her newborn son in. As time passes, she becomes more and more miserable, more and more skeptical of what’s going on behind the scenes of the J2 reality show. This downward spiral comes complete with alcoholism, self-mutilation and multiple botched escape attempts (I’ll keep my description at that because I don’t want to spoil anything). With an audience the size of up to twenty seven super bowls tuning in, and a good portion of them being radical christian conservatives, Gwen is the most hated mother in history. This doesn’t make the job of her bodyguard, Thomas’ (the hardcore, badass, Irish, ex-terrorist) job easy. Caught between his job, his past, and his morals, there’s a lot on his plate.
Anyway, I don’t have time to write anything else, but I will leave on this note: This is the most refreshing storyline I’ve come across in a long time that hasn’t been written by Ennis. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
“Charcoal rendition of Dream and Destruction from Sandman Vol. 7 Brief Lives that I made last year that got super smudged.”
